What is supply management? Why is it important? HD
Today is the last day to buy a membership in the Conservative party which gives you a vote in the conservative party leadership race. Here is why myself and my friends encourage you to #VoteNotMax. #CPC #SupplyManagement Please share to get the message out there! How does supply management work? Ask a farmer, not a politician. Letter to the editor: When Max Bernier says he is going to make dairy, eggs, turkey and chicken half the price – on face value it seems like a good idea. He says all these products are twice the market value of what they should be. Problem is Max is lying. Statistics show, on average milk in Canada cost approx. $1.48/litre & $1.65 in the USA. The same can be said for chicken, eggs and turkey. Factor in business differences like exchange rate, hydro costs, the fact that the USA Federal government subsidizes dairy while Canadian government does not, and more then 50% of USA farms report using foreign labour – and 0.17 cent difference seems negligible. Max is the only candidate in the Conservative Federal Leadership of 14 who wants to abolish supply management. The system that ensure dairy, chicken, egg and turkey receive fair farm pricing for the products they raise. He says it is because the system is not Conservative, while the remaining candidates know fair farm pricing is good for consumers and farmers. The farmer receives a fair price that is based on the cost of production and the consumer receives safe, healthy, affordable, and predictably costing foods. In the USA, without a fair farm pricing system, grocery stores have the ability to use milk and eggs as loss leaders to get people to their stores and transfer that loss to the farmer. In Canada, grocery stores can make the same choice but they cannot control the price and the farmer is still paid fairly. Farm Gate prices are so low in the USA currently; farmers are warning 1 in 6 farms will close immediately if the price goes any lower or Trump bans Mexican Labour. If we follow Max’s plan, Milk will trade like oil on an open market. Problem is cows and chickens are not oil wells with taps. When prices go low, farmers cannot simply stop milking and caring for their animals. We know Canadian consumers want Canadian milk from local Canadian farms. And the same goes for chicken, eggs and turkey. The Supply management & fair farm pricing system ensures that Canadian dairy, turkey, egg, & chicken farms will continue to thrive and support the Canadian Economy with Billions of dollars of annual GDP.
