2019-08 - CFD prediction on suction vortices in pump sump (Case 3 - Low submergence) HD
CFD prediction on suction vortices in pump sump has been carried out in OpenFOAM. This simulation was set up based on a test case to verify CFD in conference paper "CFD prediction and model experiment on suction vortices in pump sump" by Tomoyoshi Okamura, Kyoji Kamemoto and Jyunichi Matsui in 2007. Case 3 in the above paper was simulated under the following conditions: - Flow rate = 1.0 m3/min - Water depth = 150mm - Channel width = 300mm - Suction pipe diameter = 100mm - Centre of suction pipe is offset from centreline of channel by 10mm to induce vortex In short, unsteady air-entrained vortex can be seen clearly and the vortex appears almost all the time. It appears that the results match reasonably well with physical experiment. With further research and enhancement in computational power, CFD can be of great use to designer in pump sump modelling.
