This progression is mixed in this jam track with a another simple progression of 2 chords that is used in oriental/Arabic/Gypsy music. You can think of this backing track as a modal progression. You can definitely use the minor scale in A and use the harmonic minor scale to jam along. You can also use the fifth mode of the harmonic minor which is the phrygian dominant in E.
