Modes1 - What are Modes? - Music Theory Lesson for Guitar/Piano HD
Learn about Modes - A basic description of what a mode is! To play a mode of a scale you simply start on a certain degree of the scale and end back on the same note. For example, the scale C Major (Ionian) contains the notes C D E F G A B and back to C. But, if you play the same notes but start on the second degree of the scale (in this case the note D) you are now playing a different mode. Each mode has a different name. The names are; Ionian (Major), Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian & Locrian. The best way to learn them is to learn a root position shape for each scale and/or play a scale shape you my already know (major or minor probably best) and practice starting the scale on different notes to achieve a different mode.
