Today you’ll learn 3 ways to sound more natural for your IELTS Speaking Exam. Go to allearsenglish.com/insider for your free Video IELTS Masterclass! If you want to get a 7+ on your IELTS Speaking Exam, you have to sound less like a student and more like a native speaker. Seems obvious when you think about it, right? But, how can you do this? 3 Rules for More Natural IELTS Speaking 1. Informal fillers See our IELTS Energy podcast episode 413: https://ielts.allearsenglish.com/ielts-energy-413-avoid-speaking-6-informal-fillers/ When you begin your answer, say phrases like, “Well, yeah, I’d say…” or “Yeah, you know…” Natives do not directly dive into answers, and do not speak in isolated, perfect sentences. 2. Vocabulary The examiner must hear a range. This means you have to use some informal vocabulary, like slang and idioms, in Speaking Parts 1 and 2. If you don’t, you sound rehearsed and studenty. Instead of, “My hometown is convenient. I could walk everywhere. The population is…” Say, “The place I grew up was, how shall I say this… pretty sleepy. I mean, it was safe I guess, but not stimulating.” 3. Slow down Give yourself space to be expressive and use intonation and stress with personality. Watch the video to see the difference between rushing through a sentence, and saying it at a slower pace. Don’t rush, or the examiner may miss the excellent vocabulary you’re using! In our online IELTS course, 3 Keys IELTS, we give you all the strategies and practice you need to score highly on all parts of the IELTS exam.
