On June 3, 1997, the Wu-Tang Clan released their highly anticipated second album, Wu-Tang Forever. To meet the demand of devoted fans, some record stores around the United States stayed open late so that it could start selling it at midnight. The double album even included a ’90s AF enhanced CD that gave fans a virtual tour of the Wu Mansion. Comprised of 27 tracks and nearly two hours long, it was a major statement from the group. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. In just over four months, it was certified Quadruple Platinum on October 15, 1997. The Wu-Tang Clan’s debut album Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) was released in 1993, but its followup was preceded by five classic solo albums from Clan members: Method Man’s Tical, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, Raekwon’s Only Built For Cuban Linx…, GZA’s Liquid Swords and Ghostface Killah’s Ironman. Sessions for Wu-Tang Forever found the increasingly famous group holding sessions in New York, the Wu Mansion in New Jersey and Los Angeles. Wu-Tang Forever was also the first Wu project not solely produced by the group’s mastermind, the RZA. Tracks were crafted by True Master (“The M.G.M.,” “Heaterz”), 4th Disciple(“Cash Still Rules/Scary Hours,” “Older God,” “A Better Tomorrow,” “Impossible,” “The City”) and Wu member Inspectah Deck. (“Visonz”) The video for lead single “Triumph” cost over a million dollars. Director Brett Ratner has said the experience was more difficult than making his feature, Rush Hour. Today, the video remains to be one of the Wu’s and the ’90s’ rap most iconic music videos. Wu-Tang Forever was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1998 Grammys. Along with the Notorious B.I.G.’s Life After Death, Missy Elliott’s Supa Dupa Fly and Wyclef Jean’s Wyclef Jeans Presents: The Carnival, it lost to Puff Daddy’s No Way Out. During the ceremony, before singer Shawn Colvin could accept her award for Song of the Year from Wyclef Jean and Erykah Badu, Ol’ Dirty Bastard bum rushed the stage and famously declared, “Wu-Tang is for the children.” Subscribe to Mass Appeal here: http://goo.gl/LqG3wZ --------------Mass Appeal-------------- Website: http://massappeal.com Twitter: http://twitter.com/massappeal Instagram: http://instagram.com/massappeal Facebook: http://facebook.com/massappeal What started as a humble graffiti ‘zine in 1996 would soon grow to be one of the most trusted outlets for youth-spawned urban culture.
