Marangoni Effect: Tears of Wine (and Rum) HD
Often misinterpreted as a sign of quality, wine tears (also known as wine legs) form under specific conditions – regardless of the price tag. When filming this video, we tested out various combinations of glass shapes, alcohol content, and amounts of wine before capturing the elusive teardrops. We even observed a glass of Boston rum, which displayed the most prominent tears of them all. In each case, the alcohol tears are driven up and down the side of the glass by the Marangoni effect. Tears will form if the liquid contains enough alcohol and is able to wet the glass surface. Details of the alcohol shown in the video (in order of appearance): 1) Zinfandel, 15.1% alc. 2) Late harvest white dessert wine, 18% alc. 3) Boston rum, 40% alc.
