Kiedy znów zakwitną białe bzy... (When the White Lilacs Bloom Again) Slow—fox (F.Doelle) – Orkiestra Syrena Rekord pod dyr. Henryka Golda (Henryk Gold’s Orchestra), Syrena-Electro, 1929 (Polish) NOTE: This one more rendition of the immortal Springtime Hit Of The Hits - is by Henryk Gold, director of one of the best interbellum dance orchestras in Poland. As it seems, Syrena-Electro recording company had never been interested in arranging its own house dance band. The various conductors had been contracted for the series of recordings, and each of them either had his own band which he brought with him to the studio or he had to complete the band from the musicians who were available in Warsaw. Therefore, the recordings, albeit made in one certain period of time and equally labeled as e.g. Henryk Gold’s or Iwo Wesby’s bands – sound often kind of patchy, heterogenous. All that did not bother Syrena-Electro directors in adding on almost every label the phantasmagoric titre “Syrena Rekord Orchestra”… Well, whoever was currently the member of Syrena Rekord Orchestra, each time however, the strong personality and musical genius of the conductor – such as Henryk Gold, Henryk Wars, Jerzy Petersburski and so many others – as well as their perfect arrangements, have been strongly inscribed in every recording, making each of them the unique work. For the slidehow to this marvelous recording, I selected several equally dreamy and lovely slides of prewar looks of the city of Bydgoszcz – the capital of Pomerania, which is my beloved native town, where I had my first love, my first glass of wine and first cigarette smoked in my grammar school’s lavatory. The city is today regaining slowly its prewar beauty, which – fortunately – had not been totally destroyed during the war, as it did happen to so many other Polish cities.
