Ableton Live 9 PDC and automation latency compensation test
Test 1. I added a few VST which induce latency (not delay effects) ie like Waves L3 multiband in various tracks. Some tracks have more VST plugins than others, to mimic a real project. Although all VSTs are off, they still induce latency! The track SAMPLE holds an audio sample. The volume of the track is automated to -inf db. It should not produce any sound. The track REC records from the track SAMPLE. Result, sound is produced. Automation latency compensation has failed or automation is not latency compensated. This means that when you have a complex project with VSTs, your automation will be off time. However, the sample is recorded on the correct timing. It nulls when played back the recording phase reversed with the original. I repeated the same test with more complex routing via grouping, spliting a chain on an effect rack and the PDC worked ok. But automation is definitely not being compensated. Test 2. Repeating the first test but sent to Return A 100%. The sample is recorded, and it is not latency compensated. That means when you have a VST instrument with effects which induce latency and you send to a Return, the return tracks will play off time. Ie if you have a lead with VST effects and you put a delay on the return track, the delay will be off time resulting in a muddy mix. Which makes you ask, why have Return tracks when these are not Latency compensated? I could just send from one track to another one.
