Chow En Lai is faculty at Nritya Shakti for Commercial Jazz and Waacking. Regular class: Tuesday and Thursday 4:30-6pm Style Description: Waack/Punk is a form of dance created in the LGBT clubs of Los Angeles, during the 1970s disco era. This dance style was named punking because "punk" was a derogatory term for gay men in the 70s. Naming the style punking was a way of turning this negative term into something positive. A "whack" was a specific movement within the punking style. Although the heterosexual dance community took part in punking, they did not want to associate themselves with the negative, violent, and sexual connotations of name and therefore called the dance genre "waackin". Jazz dance is the performance dance technique and style that emerged in America in the early twentieth century.[1] Jazz dance may refer to vernacular jazz or Broadway or theatrical jazz. Both genres build on the African American vernacular style of dancing that emerged with jazz music. Vernacular jazz dance includes ragtime dances, Charleston, Lindy hop, and mambo. Popular vernacular jazz dance performers include The Whitman Sisters, Florence Mills, Ethel Waters, Al & Leon, Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, Dawn Hampton, and Katherine Dunham. Theatrical jazz dance performed on concert stage was popularized by Jack Cole, Bob Fosse, Eugene Louis Faccuito, and Gus Giordano. WE DO NOT OWN RIGHTS FOR THE MUSIC. USED FOR CREATIVE PURPOSE ONLY.
