Murder in Muradabad court - Uttar Pradesh

A week after the sensational court room killing of a man with criminal record in Muzaffarnagar, another undertrial with criminal cases against him, Yogendra alias Bhura (42) was shot dead by two persons outside a court room in Moradabad Monday noon. Three constables, who had escorted Bhura from the district jail to the court for hearing in a case, nabbed both the assailants. Police identified one of them as Sumit Choudhary, brother of a student leader Rinku Choudhary who was allegedly shot dead by Bhura in 2013. The other is Sumit’s cousin Pankaj. Bhura, who was lodged in Moradabad jail in Rinku’s murder case since January, 2014, was block pramukh of Dilari area in district. He was facing trial in two other cases including those under Arms Act and Gangster Act. SSP, Moradabad, Luv Kumar said the incident took place around 12 noon when Bhura was talking to Sumit and Pankaj while waiting outside a court room. Suddenly, the youths whipped out pistols and fired four rounds. Bhura sustained three bullet injuries in his head and chest, he added. While the assailants were nabbed immediately, Bhura was rushed to the district hospital where he was declared brought dead, the SSP added. According to Circle Officer, Moradabad city, Mahesh Kumar, during preliminary interrogation, Sumit, who was a witness in his brother’s murder case, claimed Bhura was putting pressure on him to give statement in his favour. He said he and other witnesses in the case feared that Bhura may get them killed. Sumit also told the police that he was looking for an appropriate time to eliminate Bhura and had started visiting him in the jail while promising to turn hostile in court. A Jat panchayat —- both Bhura and Sumit belong to the community —- was also held on the issue and it was reportedly decided that both the groups will settle the matter, the CO added. Sumit told the police, he had planned to kill a co-accused in the case, Sanjeev, too but failed to target him, the CO said, adding both the assailants have criminal antecedents. The CO said Rinku, a student leader of Hindu College in Moradabad, was shot dead in civil lines area in 2013 and Bhura was held accused of orchestrating the killing. When contacted, sub-divisional magistrate, Thakurdwara Mukesh Chand said after Bhura was arrested and sent to jail, District Magistrate Moradabad had appointed a woman BDC member as working block pramukh to look after the work.
