Labrador dog training. Working on retrieves and obedience HD
So then … Some clips from recent training … Now that we’ve laid some ground rules in respect of when and where it is acceptable to shoot off and do her own thing, we can focus more on formalised fun-time! So there are various new things happening here - and various mistakes (all mine)! She would rapidly lose interest in retrieving when the world offered something better and she had no impulse control. She would also do ‘laps of honour’ - keeping away with the retrieve item upon return - so we’re starting to use the long slow whistle blast to get her to slow her re-entry jets to assist her in delivering the item. The stop whistle, recall and heel are being combined randomly and the distance retrieve is the first I’ve tried with her because I now trust her enough to allow her to run out to retrieve from distance without the backup of an electronic collar. Her focus is better because her understanding is better. Her understanding is better because the requirements are clearer. This is not perfection, but it’s one heck of a lot better than it was - and more importantly, a LOT more enjoyable!! She isn’t being trained for a working life. She’s a pet dog, but her owners want to fulfil her breed requirements. Something that simply was not possible with a dog who would switch off and take off under any form of distraction. She still has much more to learn - no dog is ‘trained’ since training is endless! The remote collar will continue to assist where and if needed for a few more weeks as she switches her new learning across multiple environments before being faded out. Oh … She’s in season here too!! She’s a corker! Jamie Penrith Taketheleadtraining.co.uk
