HQ IS-3 Heavy Soviet Tank Walkaround Video HD

08.10.2018
One of my all-time favorites! Developed to battle heavy German tanks, the IS-3 heavy tank was designed in the latter years of WWII with the first prototypes seeing running tests in late 1944. By the time the first tanks arrived for combat, Nazi Germany had already surrendered. These tanks were seen rolling proudly in victory parades from Berlin to Moscow but did not see combat in WWII. Design and construction turned out to be problematic and so manufacture of IS-3 was ended in 1946 after a little over 2300 were produced. The IS-3 finally saw combat with the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary. Modernization began in 1958 with the "IS-M". This tank saw service in the Egyptian Army, as one of 100+ received from the Soviet Union, where they saw action in the Six Days War against Isreali forces. The IS-3M remained in service with the IDF as captured vehicles or converted to pillboxes and with the Egyptian army until the 70s. The IS-3M weighs in at a handsome 54 tons (49.000 kg) and was built for a crew of 4. Armed with a fearsome 122mm D-25T main gun and a 12.7mm DShKM with 2 7.62mm DTM secondary machine guns, it was powered by a 12 cyl diesel V-12 and had a top speed of 37 km/hr. The hemispherical, low profile cast steel turret was a departure from all previous Soviet tank turret design and became the hallmark of Cold war Soviet tanks. The armor ranges from 60 to 175 mm (2.36-6.89 in). This vehicle can be found with a fresh coat of paint at the National Armor and Cavalry Museum at Ft. Benning Army Base in Georgia, USA.
