Donna Jackson - Mr. Baraka (Panda Remix) HD
Donna Jackson for "Councilwoman-At-Large". VOTE: MAY 8, 2018 - "WRITE IN" "There has to be a voice for the voiceless," Jackson said. "Nobody wants to listen to the little people anymore." Donna Jackson is a dedicated, non-stop, take no prisoners, spare no feelings civic-minded meeting attender, a verbal hurricane always demanding answers. It has gotten her put out of Newark City Council meetings and banned from Newark public school meetings for a year. But through it all, she has won respect — even from the people she bedevils. Most of the time, they concede Donna has a point. She may yell from the podium, but she often exits to cheers and pats on the back. She is exhausting to watch, making people wonder how she has time to be everywhere. That’s easy. She’s not employed like you or I. Activism is her job, and that’s the way her family wants it. The Jacksons have long ties to Newark. Donna’s mother, a Newark school teacher, and her brothers, a Newark police officer and a correction officer, support Jackson financially so she can do the Donna thing. "It’s an extension of our father’s work, but Donna has taken it to another level," said her younger brother, Barry. "It’s her calling. Donna can’t be tied down to some 9 to 5." The late Donald Jackson was their father, a well-known community activist who fought for affordable housing. Jackson, who has three children, said her one-woman campaign took flight in 1982 when Newark public schools was not equipped to provide handicapped services to her daughter. Since then, she’s been out of the box speaking up and against anybody she feels is not doing their job. She’s been to Trenton many times, but the most memorable visit came last year when she called herself "John Q. Public" at a hearing on then-Gov. John Corzine’s budget. Radio listeners who tuned in said she was refreshing and suggested she should be lieutenant governor. Cory Booker says she doesn’t have a political agenda. She just cares about Newark, acknowledging that Jackson will show him love one minute, and curse him out the next. When that happens, officials wish she would tamp down her rhetoric and not be loose with the facts.
