The story of Underground chapter 3 - Wire: The foot-level lamps continue throughout the cave passages. Around a bend and down the tunnel a few hundred yards, he nears a hint of daylight. Quizzically, there seems to be a three-foot hole bored through the cave wall. This doesn’t make sense! Such an easy exit doesn’t jive with the frightening entrance he’s just experienced. He peers out the window. Outside is a steep mountainside overlooking a city. Footsteps approach. A middle-aged man with pale skin, hunched posture and thick beard raises a finger in warning. Something about the man’s demeanor eases Protagonist’s tension, and he hopes the man may help clue him in to his identity and whereabouts. “Why am I here? What is this place?” The pale man replies, “I’m Sal, and you must be a liar.” “This is the Underground, so you’re not here by accident.” Sal explains that the window is guarded by a row of electric beams, and the only way to pass through is in three-inch slices. The electric beams are only turned off after supplies are winched up from the city, and only momentarily so the supply crates can pass through. “Cast your eyes over that skyline. A bright new day is dawning in the city,” Sal speaks with a cynical tone while waving his hand as if to make a royal presentation. “But don’t stress yourself out, mister amnesiac – your destiny is here.” He switches to a matter-of-fact voice, “Fact is, you’re probably never gonna make it out. And even if you do, sooner or later… you’ll be back.”
