Three Main Rules for Direct Speech Punctuation • Use a comma to separate the words in quotation marks from the rest of the sentence. • Use a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and for the first word of the quotation. • Put punctuation (periods, question marks, exclamation points, commas, etc) inside the final quotation mark. (There are a few exceptions to this rule: semi-colons, colons, and a few other situations.)
