Swan Lake has been hailed by many as the greatest achievement of nineteenth-century classicism. Certainly it is among the most famous and best-loved ballets of all time. The incomparably beautiful score for the ballet was composed by the great master, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875-76. The lake on which a lovely white swan swims was formed by the tears of the sorrowful mother of Odette, a young woman changed into a swan by an evil sorcerer. It is only at night that Odette can emerge as her human self. The spell will be broken if a prince swears eternal fidelity to Odette. A Prince happens upon the lake during a hunting expedition and is about to shoot the swan, but stops when, to his amazement, the most beautiful woman he has ever seen appears as the swan vanishes. Mutually enraptured, the two fall in love and it seems all will be well until the sorcerer intervenes… The ballet is performed by Kazakhstan’s prestigious Astana Opera Ballet Company and the world-class Orchestra of Teatro Carlo Felice of Genova conducted by Giuseppe Acquaviva. Staging is by the highly experienced Kazakh director, Altynai Asylmuratova and 19th century coreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The beautiful classical style of this production emerges in brilliant choreography, with atmospheric sets by the distinguished Italian designer, Ezio Frigerio and costumes by the Academy-Award-winning and Tony-nominated costume designer, Franca Squarciapino.
