Flowery Branch, GA 12/30/13: Reading Heritage - Bee Line Through the Night HD

13.01.2014
In my last description, I referenced that our three-day Georgia Railroading Tour was "finished." This is what I meant. I learned on this trip that railfanning near terminals allows you to become privy to information that others up the road would likely not get, such as power assignments and their actual locations. Casey got a text around sunset saying that NS 1067, the Reading heritage SD70ACe, was assigned to NS 214. So upon a quick drive over to the south end of the shops at Inman, we saw the heritage motor and two others sitting outside the shop, lights on, ready to move. We traveled back to my house, grabbed a bite to eat, and began processing photos from the last three days. A friend of ours who is a conductor in the area came over for a little bit, and we told him about the chance for Reading heritage to lead 214, and he said that, provided he was still so far out on the extra board, he would make the trip with us. So he left, and Casey and I sat ready to leave. The time came for 214 to depart Atlanta, so we drove out to Radford Road, arriving at about 11:30pm. Trains P12 and P13 passed, but their consists were uneventful. Finally, 214 came over the radio, and we prepped. Our friend called at about 12:45 saying he was on the highway to meet us in Flowery Branch, and he arrived just in the nick of time. His extra set of bright lights was greatly appreciated, and it allowed us to more easily shoot the quickly-coming hotshot. Finally, at 1:00am, a K5LLAR1L blasted to the south, and we began rolling. The roar of two EMDs grew louder as the intermodal approached, and finally, a streak of green and yellow (NS SD70ACe 1067), accompanied by two black and white engines (NS SD60 6663 and NS D9-40CW 9574), flew by at 60mph, making a "Bee Line" for Harrisburg.
