A ride on the P Class Push/Pull Trains to Wyndham Vale HD

15.12.2018
On August 24th, 2017, “V/Line” operated their P Class Locomotives were to operate Push/Pull services to Wyndham Vale, here we see P14 arriving into Sunshine, where I rode the train to Tarneit and spent some time watching other trains passing through the station. Freshly repainted P17 arrives into Tarneit for a pickup and drop off, then departs for Wyndham Vale. The Push/Pull’s would then run around and return empty to Southern Cross as they were needed to run the morning service from Bacchus Marsh. The P Class Locomotives were officially rebuilt from Victorian Railways Flattop T Class Locomotives by Clyde Engineering in 1984, The rebuild was involved in constructing a new cab and car body, replacing the EMD 8-567C engine with an EMD 8-645E, as well as replacing the main generator and traction motors with a separate head end power generator. V/Line currently has a total of eight P Class Locomotives under its ownership. The trains are most commonly used in push-pull mode with H type carriages, but also operate as single locomotives if required. The Locomotives would run morning services from Bacchus Marsh, then would run two push/pull trains to Wyndham Vale, and then running empty to Melbourne. Pacific National currently has ownership of one P Class. Ettamogah Rail Hub has the ownership of four. Out of all thirteen P Classes Locomotives, three units are currently in operational, with P22 being the first to be repainted into the “Victorian Railways” Blue and Gold livery by the “Seymour Railway Heritage Centre”. P13 is mainly used as the Standard Gauge “pilot” to shunt V/line’s SG carriages from Southern Cross. P20 has been reactivated by “Pacific National’s” and is often seen rarely on a few Broad-Gauge Freight runs. Links.
