Dear Friends, I am back as promised. Once again, I hereby submit my very own painstaking translation of another soul-absorbing Mandarin Chinese song. This song is a poetic accentuation of poignant human longings for "everlasting love", "predestined affinity" and the soul-consuming thirst for "eternal union of two souls" in and out of our "dusty impermanent world". What an impossibly painful, devastatingly attractive and fatally irresistible paradigm befitting my romantic soul! This is a beautiful song indeed! How realistic and attainable is this brand of love? It has been very frustrating and discouraging at times due to my poor command of Chinese. Needless to say, I have barely scratched the surface and am still enormously ignorant. There is so much to learn. For example: many Chinese or Oriental similes, metaphors, proverbs, slang and quaint expressions elude precise and impartial translation. Degrees or portions of their inherent emotional impact and cultural nuances are lost once translated to another language. However, their gist or main points can be grasped. What are the incentives? Well, first of all, personal satisfaction in being able to acquire a major if not full understanding of the lyrics along with a subsequent betterment of language and communication skills via these projects and exercises. I am also gaining substantial joy in rendering these Chinese lyrics of such in-depth artistry and beauty into a largely or universally comprehensible mode by translating them to English, the most internationally spoken language. To faithfully, accurately and clearly bring alive the theme in its specific context with its logic, meaning, cultural, emotional and spiritual nuances without neglecting grammatical structure constitutes a tremendous yet joyous challenge! I always aim for an end result that delivers a flawless smooth-flow of wholesome clarity without sacrificing either form or content. I am well aware that there remains so much to learn before I can deliver such a result. In the meantime, please appreciate my conscientious efforts, flawed as they may be. Furthermore, I derive degrees of solace from sensing that I, no matter how minutely or obliquely, am contributing to some form of enhancement of communication and understanding around the globe; henceforth, yielding positive and fruitful results in surprising or unforeseen ways!
