Movement - Nyke Slawik Interview

Hi folks! I recently spoke to Nyke Slawik. Nyke is a member of the Bundestag (German federal Parliament). Aged 28, she is among the youngest politicians in parliament. She is advocating for a more equal society as well as climate justice. Learning about the severity of climate change when she was 15, Nyke decided to join the Green Youth in 2009. Two experiences close to her home town really shaped her thinking of how our society is failing to implement climate-friendly solutions. Firstly, the region Nyke grew up in is part of Europe’s biggest coal industry and the epicenter of carbon emissions in the EU. Secondly, many highways are planned to be extended or new ones in construction, two of them in her constituency. Now in the Bundestag, Nyke is serving as Vice Chair of the Committee on Transport and is concerned with making Germany’s transport sector climate neutral as quickly as possible, which is a tricky undertaking in a country with one of the biggest car industries worldwide. Her main objective is to stop the German government from building new highways and instead bring more people into climate-friendly public transport.
