Philadelphia Zoo Sloth Bear Enrichment Creation HD

Members were taught how keepers create one of the enrichment items the sloth bears love. The audio at the beginning of the video explains how the entire balloon is removed from the pinada after it dries and before it is given to the sloth bears. The remainder of the video has no audio because I used brief scenes from several different videos to create this overview, and the audio would have been cut off at points that would make it confusing. The steps are: 1. Inflate balloon. 2. Dip strips of newspaper in a mixture of flour and water. 3. Press the strips of newspaper evenly on the balloon but be sure to leave the neck exposed. 4. Wait for the newspaper to dry completely. Then grasp the neck of the balloon, and use scissors to snip a tiny slit just below the neck that will allow the air to slowly excape but will not cause the balloon to burst into fragments. 5. After the balloon has deflated, pull it through the opening and examine it to be sure the entire balloon is still in one piece. 7. Using a gloved hand, place apple slices inside the pinada. 8. Toss the pinada to a sloth bear. At the end of the video you can see one of the sloth bears doing its part of the demonstration, which took far less time than the human input part!
