Styling The production version of the BMW X2 looks incredibly similar to the Concept X2 shown at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It’s a bit smaller than the X1 but has the same wheelbase (distance between the front and back wheels) so interior space will be broadly similar. The swept-back headlights and larger grille give it a more youthful look than the X1, as does the BMW badge on the pillar behind the rear doors. Around the back, the car comes with LED lights and a sporty looking sculpted bumper, while the concept’s slim windows make production too. The roof is a full 70mm lower than the X1 so it might not be your next car if you have a penchant for wearing hats in the car. Entry-level models will ride on 17-inch wheels, but you’ll be able to add alloys up to 20 inches in size. Interior The interior is very similar to the X1’s, with a slash of color across the width of the dashboard. That’ll likely be an optional extra, as is Apple CarPlay, a head-up display and a larger infotainment screen than the 6.5-inch unit that comes as standard. Android Auto won’t be available from launch. Because of the much lower roofline headroom will probably be tighter than in the X1, and boot space is 35 litres less but still a decent 470 liters. There are five seats, but the middle seat will likely only be comfortable for short journeys or smaller people. Engines and driving Underneath its svelte exterior, the X2 shares a lot of mechanical parts with the X1 and Mini Countryman, so it’ll only come with four-cylinder engines. At launch, you’ll be able to get a 228hp, 2.0-litre front-wheel-drive petrol engine, and two four-wheel-drive diesel models – with either 188hp or 228hp. More engines will join the range in 2018 – a 138hp 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol, a four-wheel-drive petrol model and two- and four-wheel-drive 148hp diesel. The front-wheel-drive diesel coming in 2018 will be the most efficient, emitting just 119g/km of carbon dioxide. There is no sign of an electric or hybrid model, but this could well appear in the coming years. Price and release date The BMW X2 will start at £33,980 for the entry-level 20d SE model, and it’ll go on sale in early 2018.
