The 7,000 square foot, brick 3-story Federal residence underwent major restoration and renovation by the current owners from 2006 to 2009. Working closely with historic architect Richard Long of Newport, RI and the Salem Historical Commission, the project included replacement of 1950’s garage with a new brick “carriage house” wing that contains a magnificent kitchen, pantry, pergola porch, two-car heated garage, and loft media room. Historically significant and LEED certified, the Joseph Story House is the first National Historical Landmark residence to receive this coveted designation. Entry hall leads to living room with high ceilings, hardwood floors and a fireplace mantel of Samuel McIntire wood carving, glass pocket doors, crown molding and interior wood shutters. Also off the main hall, the dining room with distinctive built-ins for storage and entertaining (a wet bar with SubZero beverage refrigerator and ice maker) flank another McIntire mantled fireplace. The family room is paneled in turn-of-the-century quarter sawn oak, another south-facing warm room with large bay window area accommodating an ample round table.
