Synopsis : The story is based on stoneworker Moimuna, who is torn between her love for a sick gangman Kofil of Panchagarh railstation and the lust of a powerful labour leader. ‘Chitkini’ is a revision of an old folk play ‘Molua’. Molua is the heroin of the old play, while Moimuna in the revised version. The film is set in the lonely township of Panchagarh where the main activities are stone mining, sifting, loading into the wagon etc. At one point, labour leader says to Moimuna that he will knock on the door at night. If she opens the bolt, then her job becomes secure. If not, her job ends tomorrow. After dinner, her son goes to sleep. After several knocks, she unlocks the bolt. The labour leader enters the room. She thinks that this is the only way to stay around Kofil. Next morning as Moimuna approaches towards her workplace, she watches from a distance, Kofil’s dead body draped in white shroud being shifted in a casket. She then grapples up the hand of her son and walks towards the workplace. She reins her cry and gets down to work. At evening, Moimuna’s work ends. She returns home. On her way back, she hears the sound of a tube well being pressed. Stunned, she spins around: she sees Kofil’s house from afar. Kofil used to collect water from this tube well for his garden. She feels a twinge in her heart for Kofil. She breaks into a silent sob and starts walking again. The sun is going down. Even after such sacrifice & sufferings, life has to move on, which is the central theme of ‘Chitkini’.
