Something Weird The Exquisite Cadaver

Two years after his affair with beautiful but suicidal Esther Casino (JUDY MATHESON), publisher CARLOS ESTRADA has an odd package delivered to his office: a bright yellow box containing a human hand sliced neatly at the wrist. He promptly buries the box but, at home that night, his suspicious wife (TERESA GIMPERA) reads him a telegram from a mysterious woman named Parker (CAPUCINE) asking if he’s "interested in a forearm." Rendezvousing with Parker -- who may or may not have an artificial hand ("Do you think I’m attractive despite my artificial hand or because of it?") -- Carlos is taken to a wealthy estate, given LSD, has his body dyed yellow, and follows the voice of dead Esther to a refrigerator in which she sits dead, naked, and frozen. And yes, folks, Miss Matheson is most definitely an exquisite cadaver. But Parker, Esther’s lesbian lover, blames the publisher for Esther’s death and, hating men in general and Carlos in specific, decides to up the ante in her little game of psychological torture. She drags Esther’s body from the fridge, puts it on the kitchen table and, like any good dyke would, takes a carving knife to the corpse. She then sends the poor guy Esther’s head in a cardboard box... Best described as elegant perversity, The Exquisite Cadaver (aka The Exquisite Corpse) is drenched in off-kilter seventies lyricism coated with a haunting jazz score by MARCO ROSSI. Though the point here seems to be that men use women simply as sexual objects, director VICENTE ARANDA doesn’t hesitate turning the frequently naked Miss Matheson into the fetish of the week. Aranda would take the themes of lesbianism and women’s hatred of men one step further with his next film, the far better known shocker Blood Spattered Bride (1972). And horror hounds will no doubt recognize Teresa Gimpera as Hannah, Queen of the Vampires from Crypt of the Living Dead (1973).
