On the eighth episode of Secret Lives of Americans we meet Travis, a hardworking bus driver from Victorville, California. After getting a look into Travis’ life, it’s not hard to see that he exudes nothing but positive energy and compassion. Not only is he a mentor to his children and his girlfriend’s children, but he also coaches a local football team. Despite the guidance and feeling of acceptance Travis offers the young ones in his life, his own childhood was quite the opposite. “I have a secret I want to tell. I’ve been abused as a child,” Travis says with emotion. Perhaps what Travis feared jeopardizing most was his relationship with his longtime girlfriend, Veronica. Even after being together six years, he never had the courage to let her into his past. Now that has changed. “Since revealing my secret my life is going great. It’s very important to have my support from my son—especially my girlfriend, Veronica. She’s there for me, and to have her by my side supporting me, I feel good about it,” Travis says with a smile. Viewers and the loved ones in Travis’ life weren’t the only individuals Travis needed to come clean to. To move forward, he had to dive even deeper into his past. He had to come face-to-face with his parents. “Me and my mom are still shaky right now," he says. "Things are hard, and I haven’t spoke to her as much. I feel good now that I talked to my dad. It was hard, but it was something I had to do. It helped me realize that I can be a better dad to my kids.” The confrontations with his mom and dad are difficult to watch. But it appears that diving deep into the past was the only way to let the grievances of childhood go. Now, Travis is more compelled than ever to be a great dad and a great companion and to lead a great life. “I feel open. I feel relieved. I want to leave my past behind and start living my life for the future. I’m ready. I’m ready for this new journey," he says as he shuts off the camera.
