Many fans started binging season 2 of ‘13 Reasons Why’ the MOMENT it was dropped on Netflix last week, which means plenty have already finished watching all 13 episodes. Those who’ve already finished the season, and some who just read or heard about how the show ends, have taken to social media to share their outrage at the incredibly graphic finale scene, in which a male student is sodomized by another student. While this season DID show warning of graphic material before the episodes, most were not prepared for just how violent the finale was. In the episode, troubled student Tyler returns to Liberty High after getting help for his anger issues, but is jumped by three student athletes in the bathroom, including bully Monty. Tyler’s head is slammed into the bathroom mirror and then stuffed down a toilet, at which point the bullies sodomize Tyler with the end of a broomstick. Tyler is left bloodied and crying, and the episode ends with him showing up to the school dance armed with multiple guns. Right before he heads in to enact his violent plan of vengeance, Clay convinces him to not go through with the shooting just outside the building. There was an outpouring of complaints on social media about the episode, especially surrounding the bathroom rape scene. Many even called for the show to be canceled, which prompted ‘13 Reasons Why’ creator Brian Yorkey to issue a statement. The statement read in part QUOTE, “We’re committed on this show to telling truthful stories about things that young people go through in as unflinching a way as we can. We fully understand that that means some of the scenes in the show will be difficult to watch...But the fact is that, as intense as that scene is, and as strong as the reactions to it may be, it doesn’t even come close to the pain experienced by the people who actually go through these things.” He continued QUOTE, “When we talk about something being ‘disgusting’ or hard to watch, often that means we are attaching shame to the experience. We would rather not be confronted with it. We would rather it stay out of our consciousness. This is why these kinds of assaults are under-reported. This is why victims have a hard time seeking help. We believe that talking about it is so much better than silence.” Mr. Yorkey went on to explain that he and the ‘13 Reasons Why’ team did extensive research on male-on-male sexual violence before writing and filming the episode, and that both Netflix and Paramount were on board to include the scene after extensive discussions. He also argued that Hannah and Jessica’s rape scenes in season one were equally graphic, but that they didn’t receive as much outrage or backlash as Tyler’s scene.
