Reset Linux r00t(root) Password - BackTrack 4 r2 [d1t1] HD
Reset Linux r00t(root) Password - BackTrack 4 r2 [d1t1] *All we need is a LiveCD Linux system, i am using BackTrack 4 r2 LiveDVD Download BackTrack 4 r2 ISO file here: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/download.php?fname=bt4r2 I am using Virtual Machine with VMware - First you can see that my installed Backtrack 4 r2 system requires a password!!! - Second i connect the ISO file - or insert the DVD and than Boot IT UP in bios Starting the LIVE DVD from ISO with VMware - we need to select the boot device in vmware we can open the menu with ESC - Third reset the Password - just watch how i do it In some linux systems the username/password database is located at "/etc/passwd" If you have any other linux system just search on google where the username/password file is located In Mac OS X is located "/etc/passwd" BUT in Backtrack 4 r2 is located at "/etc/shadow" To make the change we need to mount first the partition where our linux system is located. All you have to do is remove the second words between ":" of the user, in this case is root and i change this: root:blahblahblah:15098:0:99999:7::: to this: root::15098:0:99999:7::: "blahblahblah" is the encrypted password i am using nano, to save press CTRL+X and than Y and ENTER -- then unmount the Partition! then reboot and see it yourself, root is without password! [d1t1] Sorry i Made a mistake for MAC OS X You can reset password in MAC OS X by reading this page: http://www.macyourself.com/2009/08/03/how-to-reset-your-mac-os-x-password-without-an-installer-disc/
