Alpine: I-8 Fatal 07152022 (Added Info from the CHP) HD

INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 7-15-22 8:38 am LOCATION: EB I-8 JWO Tavern Rd CITY: Alpine DETAILS: The female driver was westbound on the I-8 when for unknown reasons, she lost control of her SUV and went off the roadway. The SUV traveled down a steep embankment, rolling and flipping, and crashed into the eastbound #1 lane. It’s believed that the female was ejected and died at the scene. A female driver was eastbound in her Mazda when she was hit by a wheel and tire that came off of the SUV. She was not injured. A SIG Alert has been issued for the eastbound lanes of the I-8. From the CHP: Alpine, California: On July 15, 2022, at approximately 8:30 am, a 35-year-old female from Lakeside was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe westbound on Interstate 8, west of Tavern Road. The Chevrolet was carrying a 9-year-old female in the left rear seat and a 3-year-old female in the right rear seat. For reasons still under investigation, the driver lost control of the vehicle and traveled onto the center dirt portion of Interstate 8 which separates the westbound lanes from the eastbound lanes. The vehicle overturned as it traveled down the dirt descending embankment and came to rest in the #1 eastbound lane of Interstate 8. Debris from the Chevrolet struck a Mazda 3 traveling in the eastbound lanes which was driven by a 44-year-old female from El Cajon. As a result of the crash, the driver of the Chevrolet, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries on scene. The 3-year-old passenger who was restrained in a car seat suffered moderate injuries. The 9-year-old passenger who was wearing a seat belt also suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego for treatment. The driver of the Mazda 3 was wearing a seat belt and sustained no injuries. At this point in the investigation, drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been a factor in this crash. The medical examiner responded to the crash scene and took possession of the deceased. Her identity will be released through the Medical Examiner’s office once family notifications has been made.
