The Trulli of Alberobello - Italy, Puglia, Bari - the UNESCO World Heritage site - by Kari Gröhn karigrohncom Limestone dwellings in the southern region of Puglia, sometimes described as the "heel" of the Italian "boot", are made of roughly worked boulders collected from neighbouring fields. They feature conical roofs built up of corbelled limestone slabs. The trulli were generally constructed as temporary field shelters and storehouses or as permanent dwellings by small proprietors or agricultural labourers. In the town of Alberobello, in the province of Bari, whole districts are packed with trulli. Alberobello is one of the best preserved and most homogeneous urban areas of this type in Europe. Its special features, and the fact that the buildings are still occupied, make it unique. There are many theories behind the origin of the design. One of the more popular theories is that due to high taxation on property the people of Puglia created dry wall constructions so that they could be dismantled when inspectors were in the area. This is known to have occurred in 1644 to thwart tax inspectors sent by the King of Naples. In the Alberobello region, local residents who still live in trulli only do so because they cannot afford to move out or because they provide bed and board for tourists in their trulli. Puglia folk music - Pizzica de Focu Pizzica is both a rhythm and a dance from the region of Puglia . The roots of Tarantella (Pizzica is a style of it) are supposed to be in the greek-roman period in connection with pagan rituals. The basic "ensemble" to play pizzica was Tambourine, Diatonic Accordion and Violin, but also guitar, mandolin and flute are played. One of the purposes of this kind of composition was and still is healing somebody "from the bite of the Tarantola" which is a spider, or from a general "sickness of the soul", the sick person dance hours till he fall down exhausted, the drum player often bleeding from the hand cause the beating on the drum.
