Teaching and learning resources for university faculty members. Using icebreakers to further class aims. In traditionally aged classes, consider aiming icebreakers at the emerging adult level. ********************************** Video overview - Reminder: many students are new this week; try to make a personal connection with your students - I collect necessary information about students and a photo to help me learn their name - Description of emerging adulthood - I share an icebreaker that I do that is aimed at emerging adults but also helps students talk about any anxiety they may have in taking a statistics class. What fun icebreakers do you use? Please share links or write a description below. Also, what do you think of orienting icebreakers towards a specific developmental group? Share in the comments! ********************************** Links: Most (but, not all!) students in our program are emerging adults, for more information about the developmental milestones in this age, please go to: http://www.apa.org/monitor/jun06/emerging.aspx Tip- Figure out what you’d like to accomplish with your icebreaker. - Is your class one that students have anxiety about? Find an interesting way of talking about it. - Do you have a large class? Find one that can be done quickly or done in a group setting. - Do you need to build trust as this class asks students to share personal experiences? Find a way of introducing every student to each other. - Is this an intensive writing class? Set the tone by doing a written icebreaker. Here are a couple of ideas for icebreakers aimed at the college level: https://ucat.osu.edu/bookshelf/teaching-topics/shaping-a-positive-learning-environment/12-icebreakers-college-classroom/ *********************************** Thanks for watching this video!
