K-Pop at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards HD

I was not initally going to talk about the nominees and the creation of a K-Pop category for the 2019 VMAs but I saw a tweet that gave me some thoughts that I wanted to share. The tweet mentioned the new K-Pop category, insinuating that the purpose was to make sure that BTS didnt beat any of the Western nominees they could be facing. I do think that the voting power of ARMYs is substantial but I also think that there are a few other reasons to consider as well. One aspect is that there are more than one K-Pop group that is popular in the US(some ARMYs online downplay this fact) and K-Pop as a genre gets a significant amount of attention from certain segment of the population. BTS, Blackpink, Monsta X, TXT, NCT 127 and EXO are having noticable success in the US which has earned them the nomination. The other factor is that having more than one K-Pop group involved boosts the attention of the awards significantly. MTV will get more people voting, more people watching and more people spending their money to attend the award show. Maybe there is some conspiracy but I think that it is more likely that MTV is just recognizing the every growing market share that K-Pop is grabbing.
