With their wide range of racist, sexist, xenophobic humor, Parker and Stone consider themselves to be “equal opportunity offenders” as they shock audiences and push boundaries. Over the years, countless activists have condemned the show, groups have spoken out and schools have even banned students from wearing South Park t-shirts. 3 episodes had to be removed from television because of death threats. These are the five most controversial episodes of all time. 5. “Trapped in the Closet” Season 9- episode 12, November 16, 2005 Plot: After Stan decides to join scientology, he is discovered to have extremely high thetan levels, which believes him to be the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard, the deceased founder of the church. The episode was titled after the famous music series by R. Kelly, who also appears as a character in the episode, along with acclaimed scientologists Tom Cruise and John Travolta. This episode was sure to offend anyone who believed in scientology, and was actually the cause of Isaac Hayes, the voice of Chef, to leave the show 4. Cartoon Wars 1/2” Season 10- episode 3/4, April 5, 2006 Plot: When it is announced that Family Guy will air an episode featuring the Muslim prophet Muhammed as a character, citizens are left fearing for their lives. Cartman believes the episode to be offensive and goes to Hollywood in attempts to get it removed from the air. These episodes were created in response to riots in the early 2000s that occurred in Europe by newspapers featuring cartoons featuring the prophet Muhammed, as well as Comedy Central’s censorship of previous episodes of South Park, including Trapped in the Closet in 2005. Despite its difficulties, the episode was well-received by critics and audiences and ironically received the biggest rise for its inclusion of Family Guy. 3.
