Your Medication Alprazolam Alprazolam is also known as the brand name: Xanax or Xanax XR Alprazolam comes in 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 mg immediate release tablets and 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mg extended release tablets Alprazolam is most commonly used for: anxiety disorders, short-term relief of anxiety, or panic disorders. Alprazolam may also be used in children ages 8-17 for anxiety. Do not stop taking alprazolam suddenly; you must slowly lower the dose. No matter what your doctor has you taking it for, alprazolam is usually taken by mouth up to three times a day. Standard dosing of alprazolam ranges from: 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg up to three times a day Some common side effects with alprazolam include: drowsiness, tiredness, and loss of full control of your body. Some less common side effects include: low blood pressure, dry mouth, or confusion. Do not take alprazolam if you have narrow-angle glaucoma or if you are taking ketoconazole or itraconazole. Grapefruit juice should also be avoided as it can interact with alprazolam.
