Testing the Canon Extender Mk III with EOS 5D Mark IV and Panasonic GH4 Note: This video is geared more towards shooting video with the Canon 2x Teleconverter but you can see all the sample images on our full review... Full Review Here: http://www.all-things-photography.com/blog/canon-2x-extender-mark-iii-review/ FYI: The intro was filmed on the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV at 4K MJPEG The Canon 2X Extender Mark III is a great tool to have in your kit bag if you have the right kit to go with it and understand its limitations. I guess it is a fairly niche product that not everyone will feel comfortable with so this video will hopefully give you some idea of how it performs with 2 popular camera systems using apertures of f4 (GH4 only due to Metabones Speedbooster being used which gives an extra stop), f5.6, f8, f11, f16 and f22. All clips were shot in 4K on both the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and Panasonic GH4. The 5D Mark IV 4K video uses the MJPEG codec at 500mbps and the GH4 was output to the Atomos Ninja Flame to Pro Res HQ which is 754mbps. Note: No ND filters were used to reduce the shutter speed at wide apertures as I wanted to rely solely on the glass used for quality comparison. The 5D Mark IV with 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) plus 2x Extender plus 1.74x crop at 4K meant the focal length used was just shy of 700mm (696mm). The GH4 with 70-200mm (at 200mm) plus 2x Extender, plus Metabones Speedbooster (.71x), plus 2.3x crop from 4K sensor at 4K meant the focal length used on the GH4 was 653mm. Another Note: As I was shooting on a sunny day with such a large focal length, there was some atmospheric heat haze which is obviously intensified at these lengths. I shot a couple of close up subjects at the end to show the clarity of this set up without any atmospheric interference. All test shots at the end of the video were taken using the Panasonic GH4, Metabones Speedbooster, Canon EF 70-200mm L IS and Canon 2X Extender Mark III at f16 and output to the Atomos Ninja Flame at Pro Res HQ. This was to show the highest quality possible using the 2X Extender. Results Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. Rolling shutter is bad. Shooting at f5.6 not great quality. F8 better and sharper but still a little "mushy". F11 better still and "usable" IMHO. F16 is still good but not much difference to f11. F22 shows a possible loss of quality due to diffraction but could be due to the slightly higher ISO of 250 (although a full frame 5D Mark IV at ISO 250 should be fine). Shooting stills, I found that f16 was my preferred aperture and was the one that got best results. Autofocus uses the central vertical band of points and is lightning fast from f5.6 all the way to f22 and beyond...impressive. Panasonic GH4. Rolling shutter not nearly as bad as the GH4. Shooting at an aperture of F4 showed surprisingly good quality...better than the 5D Mark IV at f5.6. F5.6 showed improvement with good detail. F8 got much better with excellent detail. F11 not much difference to f8. F16
