19.10.2016
Molecular Horizons: the University of Wollongong’s Centre for Molecular and Life Sciences is an $80 million research facility that will be a world-leading research facility with a focus on transformational molecular research - research that can be used in solving some of the biggest challenges facing the world today such as developing new forms of antibiotics and curing cancer. The centrepiece of the facility will be the ultra-high resolution Titan Krios Cryo-EM microscope, one of only two in Australia and the only one in Australia specifically configured for biological single molecule analysis. A second microscope, the Talos Arctica, which is a smaller version with the same sophisticated imaging technology, is also being acquired. It will complement the flagship Titan Krios through faster sample preparation and will be the first of its kind in use in Australia. The Centre and its state-of-the-art equipment will position UOW and NSW as a hub for leading research in molecular science, attracting visiting researchers from around the world, partnerships with major international institutions that will help put UOW among the top 1 per cent of universities in the world. The new Molecular Horizons facility will be located on UOW’s main campus and will form the hub of an integrated ‘UOW Science Precinct’. The investment will provide a focal point for medical sciences in the region, generating important advances in health as well as more jobs and educational opportunities.
