Treatment for Opiate Use Disorders with Michael Fingerhood, MD, FACP HD

This lecture was a part of the "Preparing for Change: Emerging Models for Integrated Health Care Delivery Conference" that took place in Towson, MD on March 20 - 21, 2014 and was sponsored by the Clinical Trials Network and Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network. The workshop will cover evidence based options for treatment of opiate dependence, discussing the traditional 12 step medication free approach and the medications approved for treatment- naltrexone, methadone and buprenorphine. Within the context of integrated health care delivery, we will discuss the evidence for combining medication assisted therapy 5 with the provision of primary care. Michael Fingerhood, MD, FACP, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University. The mission of his career has been to promote and improve the provision of medical care to patients with substance abuse and HIV with the development, maintenance and evaluation of innovative programs related to the care of these individuals. In 1994, Dr. Fingerhood created the Comprehensive Care Practice, a primary care practice largely devoted to providing primary care to individuals with substance abuse and/or HIV. He is the medical director of the practice that has six providers, with over 12,000 patient visits per year. The practice has been innovative in integrating buprenorphine treatment into the primary care setting for over 350 individuals. This dissemination conference brought together leading experts in behavioral health best practices to share ideas for improving health care delivery in the environment of health reform. The conference featured presentations focusing on the large system issues and challenges. Practical workshops provided concrete information on how to implement specific evidence based practices in integrated health settings. Workshop topics included screening and brief intervention for use in adult and adolescent health settings, treatment for alcohol, tobacco and opiate use disorders.
