A Friend | The Mandalorian Season 2 Cover | Luke vs. The Dark Troopers HD

Man, what a finale Mandalorian Season 2 had! Din Djarin and Grogu parting ways was one of the most emotional 2 minutes in Star Wars, and right before that, of course, the surprise introduction of a Luke Skywalker in his prime. Ludwig Goransson named this cue “A Friend” which was effective in keeping the massive reveal hidden, but personally “Single X-Wing” might have be a missed missed naming opportunity. This cue plays as Luke arrives on the Light Cruiser and proceeds to shred through a formerly intimidating Squadron of Imperial Remnant Commando Troopers. There’s some symphonic vibes, a hint at trap, and some haunting synths and guitar which match the cinematography and build-up perfectly. Probably the most underrated part of this scene is how slow they roll out the information. Keeping the footage black and white leaves options open for who it could be. And then when the green lightsaber and glove walk into frame ... just unbelievably epic. Also well done: setting up a single Dark Trooper as a nearly impossible opponent for Din Djarin and then having Luke slice through them like butter really puts the power scaling for the show in perspective and demonstrated just how OP a fully trained Jedi is. I experimented with a totally new genre here by exaggerating Gorranson’s subtle hints at trap, blowing it up into a heavy trap beat, which was pretty fun to program. I also fleshed out some pretty nasty harmony which is just low enough in the mix that it doesn’t sound bad, but still makes you uncomfy. Thanks for listening! This was a fun one to play around with and adapt to some very different instrumentation.
