These motors can produce a lot of torque and thus a large back EMF when reversing directions without a proper break. That is why it is imperative to have freewheeling diodes and electrolytic capacitors in place for surge suppression. I recommend using the L298N motor driver because it is much more robust and has better over-current protection. The L298N will be able to drive much higher loads (stronger motors).
