Oistphocomus hoazin * Hoatzin HD

Oistphocomus hoazin, Shansho, Hoatzin, Xanxo A robust bird with a relatively small head. Long neck and tail. Very notable crest on the head which projects upwards and forwards. Large, blue bare ocular area. Red eyes. Dark brown back with small white patches that descend from the neck. Brown wings. Creamy yellow neck and chest down to the abdomen. Rufous-brown abdomen, legs and under tail coverts. File data: Manu National Park, Pillcopata, Peru, May - Octopber 2007, July 2008. ESP.: A pesar de ser un ave bastante abundante, tiene algunas raras peculiaridades que le dan el apodo de fósil viviente: en las alas tiene unas garras atrofiadas; el pico tiene rugosidades como dientes rudimentarios y una parte de su aparato digestivo es semejante al de un rumiante.
