Switch all 3 drives with Boomer www.TheBalancedDogca.com In this video I’m working with my Mentor student Zephalinda (www.zephalindadogcoach.nl), and Boomer, a shelter dog who is waiting to be adopted. We are focusing on the 3 drives (Prey, Pack and Defense) and working Boomer off the horse. I’m working with my student on switching Boomer between the 3 drives. As he moves towards the horse his head begins to lower which is him loading into Prey Drive. We want to switch Boomer back into Pack Drive but in order to do that we need to go through his Defense Drive. Depending on the level of the dog’s training this can be done in different ways: If the dog has been well trained in these types of situations a simple "leave it" may work. Alternatively you can use a leash check followed by a recall or “let’s go” command. Whichever approach is taken it is important to be aware that you need to take the dog through the Defense Drive in order to get him out of Prey Drive and back into Pack Drive. A key indicator that the dog is in Defense Drive is the ears have gone back, as you can see with Boomer in this video. A simple way to then put the dog into Pack Drive is to either recall, change direction away from what he’s fixating on (in this case it was the horse), or bring into a heel position. Check out my other videos for more examples of the 3 drives and switching drives.
