A heritage of the long tradition of French clockmaking, rooting back to the 18th Century: Henri, first of the Maillardets, was the partner of the Jacquet-Droz family and built with his brothers numerous automatons made to order by the Kings and Emperors of the time. Following his ancestors steps, Pierre Maillardet’s ambition lead him to take over a factory known as the Geismar works in 1937, including it’s workshop in Besancon which was set up in the iconic building of the Taragnoz Mill. This acquisition aimed at providing the company with a full in-house movement production line thus granting it the status of Manufacture. Among those assets and on top of the immense technical know-how of Geismar & Co, was a registered trademark synonymous with precise and reliable pocket watches since 1911: ULTRA. The Superautomatic was hence the first French-made automatic watch, boasting an in-house developed automatic module fitted on a regular hand-winding caliber. Its technology, described in the picture below, was using a two-way rotor that preceded Seiko’s “Magic Lever” by over 15 years and was even sold to Citizen for their very first automatic watch in 1958. Having built a reputation for reliable and sturdy mechanics, the company was selected to fit the clocks of one of the most prestigious cars of all times, the Citroen DS, the official French President’s car of the 1960s and a favorite of General de Gaulle.
