Self i.e. is a devised theatre piece exploring the psychological, socio-cultural and ideological work of “selfies.” George Orwell famously said that “[t]o see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle” and the object of our inquiry could hardly be any closer to us. To see the taking-and-posting of selfies for what it is, and the self that is constructed through this most contemporary form of self-portraiture, indeed requires careful critical attention. Created by an ensemble of 21 actors through guided research and improvisations, the piece (mostly in English, but also including sections in Spanish and German) combines text, movement and an electronic soundscape (played live) to explore the positive and negative uses teenagers make of this new technology of the Self. Ludic, sharp, dynamic, inventive, Self i.e. presents in engaging theatrical ways theoretical ideas relating to the selfie, the product of primary and secondary research, and also dramatizes the psychological motivations behind selfie-taking and selfie-sharing. Célebremente, George Orwell dijo que “Ver lo que tenemos delante de nuestras narices requiere una lucha constante” y el objeto de nuestro estudio no podría estar más cerca nuestro. Comprender la práctica de sacarse selfies y colgarlos de redes sociales, así como el ser construido a través de esta novel forma de autoretrato, requiere de cuidadosa atención crítica. Creado por un ensamble de 21 actores a través de investigación guiada e improvisaciones, la pieza (en inglés, pero con momentos en español y alemán) combina texto, movimiento y música electrónica interpretada en vivo para explorar los usos positivos y negativos que los adolescentes hacen de esta nueva tecnología del Yo. Lúdica, aguda, dinámica, inventiva, Self i.e. presenta de manera atractiva ideas teóricas acerca de los selfies, producto de investigación primaria y secundaria, y también dramatiza las motivaciones psicológicas detrás de la creación de selfies.
