This time we’ll take a look at arithmetic operations or арифметические операции in Russian, but first we have the intro song along with the vocabulary words for this lesson. [song and words] So, let’s kick things off with a quick joke: QUESTION: Did you hear about the mathematician who’s afraid of negative numbers? ANSWER: He will stop at NOTHING to avoid them. The translation of this joke to Russian is problematic, but it would go something like this: вопрос: Вы слышали о математике, который боится отрицательных чисел? However, when we get to the punchline, there is a problem. The correct translation for “He will stop at NOTHING to avoid them” is Он не остановится ни перед чем, чтобы избежать их. However, this sentence does not convey the double meaning contained in the English version of the joke. Another translation for the punchline is Он остановится в ничего чтобы избежать их. Although it is a literal translation of the punchline, the problem here is that it doesn’t make much sense in Russian and so the joke simply does not work in Russian. So, moving on to the topic of arithmetic operations, we have the following question: Сколько будет пять и шесть? (How much is five and six?) The question may be answered in the following ways: Конечно, ответ одиннадцать. (Of course, the answer is eleven.) Очевидно, что ответ одиннадцать. (It is obvious that the answer is eleven.) Ну, конечно, одиннадцать. (Well, of course, eleven.) or just plain Одиннадцать. (Eleven.) All of which, convey the idea that the answer is eleven, one way or another. As for subtraction, the following phrases might be used: Сколько будет из одиннадцати отнять шесть? (What is eleven take away six?) Сколько будет одиннадцать минус шесть? (How much is eleven minus six?) Moving along to multipliction we have: Сколько будет пять на шесть? (What is five times six?) Optionally, the question could be worded like this: Сколько будет пять умножить на шесть? (What is five multiplied by six?) Next we have division: Сколько будет тридцать делить на шесть? (What is five divided by six?) While we can leave умножить out of a question about multiplication, we must say the word делить to specify division since leaving out the word implies multiplication. Additionally, the following words and phrases are pertinent to this lesson: таблица умножения - multiplication table десятичная точка - decimal point дробь - fraction So, moving on to the vocabularly list for this lesson, we have: отрицательный - negative боя́ться - to be afraid остановиться - to stop избежать - to avoid число́ - number отнять - to subtract двадцать - twenty девяносто - ninety десятичный - decimal точка - point таблица - table дробь - fraction And that brings this arithmetic lesson to an end.
