Driving from the very famous monastery of Agia Lavra (Holy Lavra) to Kalavryta town. The monastery is linked with the Greek War of Independence. It was the place were the revolution against the Ottoman Empire was launched on 25 March 1821 by Bishop Germanos of Patras. Kalavryta has a population of 11,045 inhabitants and the town is well known because of the massacre that took place on 13 December 1943, during World War II. German troops ordered all male residents of Kalavryta, aged 14 years and up, to gather in a field just outside the village where they executed all of them. Only 13 people survived.
