Italian Bersaglieri 120mm Mortar Teams Firing HD

Italian troops train in Romania while participating in NATO’s largest exercise this year, Steadfast Defender 2021 (STDE21). Troops from the Italian 1st Regiment Bersaglieri mortar platoons train in Cincu, Romania on May 23, 2021. The trooops are filmed firing 120mm MO-120-RT heavy mortars. The MO-120 RT uses standard NATO rounds with a range of 8,2 km and the PRPA (RAP-Rocket Assisted Projectile) with a range of 13 km. The weapon can be fired either by dropping the round down the tube (after aligning of the rifling bands) resulting in an automatic firing once the bomb hits the tube base, or by a controlled firing by dropping the bomb down the tube and pulling on a lanyard that will in turn set off the triggering mechanism in the base of the tube. Rounds fired from the mortar can reach as high as about 4,000 m and hit the ground with an effective kill radius of nearly 250 ft (76 m). Steadfast Defender 2021 is a NATO-led exercise involving over 9,000 troops from more than 20 NATO Allies and partners. The objective is to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together and ready to respond to any threat from any direction.
