London Docklands 2 - Docklands.mpg
The London docks made the city prosperous. But, by 1979 were empty and derelict. The government created the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) to regenerate the area - one tenth of London. Highly controversial the LDDC had no clear plan at the start, more reacting to circumstances. By closure in 1997 it had created, among other things - the DLR, City airport and Canary Wharf. It showed the world how to regenerate an inner city. Without it Paris would have held the 2012 games. This clip comes from a film I made with Desmond Wilcox (the VO) and the then LDDC team in 1997 - Battle for Docklands - the story of the LDDC. The first speaker is architect Piers Gough. Reg Ward, the first Chief Exec. passed away recently, may he rest in peace. London should be grateful to him. My (c) is a spoiler only - I have had clips used by others.
