Book Review: “How to Think Bigger” by Martin Meadows HD

This week I’m reviewing the book “How to Think Bigger” by Martin Meadows This book can be read in one sitting, and I’m all about short books packed with useful information. This is the first book I’ve read from this author, but he has several others I’m planning to read as a result of what I got out of this one. The author is a big fan of learning from successful people which I wholeheartedly agree with. If you want to be successful, study success. He suggests reading books about success and surrounding yourself with ambitious people, two things you’ve heard me talk about in some other videos. My first takeaway is how different types of motivation affect our drive and ambition. I really enjoyed his discussion on intrinsic (or internal) motivation, which I’ve always felt was the most important. But he points out that prosocial motivation (the desire to help others) is even more powerful than intrinsic motivation. According to the author, knowing your Why is important, but also having a Who can be very powerful as well. Who are you trying to impact besides yourself? Second, is the author’s suggestion to make a regular habit of looking at your problems from a distance. Most people stay so busy that they do not make time to slow down and do “big picture thinking.” He recommends spending some time in nature, eliminating all distractions and focusing on what you are trying to accomplish and whether or not your current methods are getting you any closer. One final point that I found particularly useful is to not confuse motion for action. Just because you’re busy all the time doesn’t mean you’re highly productive. Take a good look at how your’re spending your time and make adjustments where you can to get better results. I loved his discussion of strategic laziness, which is the result of disassociating effort from reward. The author suggests figuring out which outcomes are the most important to you and then focusing in on the easiest way to make them happen. You need to find ways to get results with the least effort, least sacrifice and most pleasure. In other words, be efficient. How can you achieve extraordinary results without extraordinary effort? That concept alone is worth the price of this book, which is not expensive to begin with, especially the Kindle version on Amazon. There’s a link below if you’d like to check it out. If you’ve read this book, I’d love to hear your takeaways. Please let us know if it made an impact on you in some way. Just leave a comment below. Remember, if you think big, you can make an impact, and you can lead a full life.
