20 March 2014, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany Prof. Susan Wagner-Cook talk at 5th EUCogIII Members Conference Title: Embodied communication: Hand gesture Slides: http://www.eucognition.org/uploads/docs/EUCogIII_Fifth_Conf_Bochum_2014/Cook_BochumTalk.pdf Abstarct: Although spoken language is a highly effcient means of communication, speakers gesture when they talk, bringing their bodies into communication. In this talk I will discuss recent research demonstrating the variety of ways that speech and gesture are coordinated, as well as evidence that listeners are highly sensitive to temporal coordination across modalities. I will argue that speech and gesture have mutually interacting influences on how we shape our message, and how that message is understood.
